Passengers Carrying Cash, Gold, or Other Valuables Must Declare Them to Customs

Taipei Customs reminds inbound and outbound passengers that cash, gold, and other valuables exceeding the prescribed thresholds must be declared to Customs.

Under Article 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Regulations for Cross-border Declaration and Reporting, outbound passengers carrying any of the regulated items listed below are required to submit a declaration to Customs at the Customs Departure Service Desk before departure. Inbound passengers carrying such items must declare them on the ROC Customs Declaration Form and proceed through the red channel for Customs inspection and clearance.

The declaration thresholds are as follows:

  • Foreign currencies (including Hong Kong and Macao currencies): Aggregate value exceeding USD 10,000.

  • New Taiwan dollars (NTD): Aggregate amount exceeding NT$100,000.

  • Chinese yuan (RMB): Aggregate amount exceeding RMB 20,000.

  • Securities: Total face value exceeding USD 10,000.

  • Gold: Aggregate value exceeding USD 20,000.

  • Diamonds, gemstones, and platinum: Aggregate value exceeding NT$500,000 when intended for non-personal use.

Taipei Customs further reminds pasengers that NTD and RMB are subject to statutory import and export limits. Any amount exceeding the prescribed limits is not permitted to be brought into Taiwan, even if declared to Customs. The same restrictions apply to outbound passengers. In contrast, there is no limit on the amount of foreign currency that may be brought into or taken out of Taiwan, provided it is properly declared.

For gold declarations, Customs determines the value based on the selling price of a one-kilogram gold bar published by the Bank of Taiwan on the passenger's date of arrival or departure, rather than the purchase price. As international gold prices fluctuate frequently, travelers carrying gold are advised to check whether its current value exceeds the declaration threshold before traveling.

Passengers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the relevant declaration requirements before departure or upon arrival. If they have any questions regarding declaration procedures, they may seek assistance from Customs officers to ensure a smooth clearance process and protect their interests.
