Customs Hosts Simulated International Video Conference to Enhance Officers' International Customs Competence and Meeting Participation Skills

To enhance officers' understanding of international customs trends and their ability to participate in international discussions, the Customs Administration has organized two full-English simulated international video conferences annually, rotating them among its field customs. These conferences provide a platform for practical exercises, strengthening officers' professional knowledge and communication abilities on foreign affairs and cross-border cooperation. The second simulated international video conference of 2024 was successfully held on December 4, jointly hosted by Kaohsiung and Keelung Customs, with enthusiastic participation from the Customs Administration and all field customs.
In addition to exchanging practical case experiences, this simulated conference focused on the impact and outlook of key international trade developments on customs operations. The topics discussed included: the methods to intercept illegal medical devices during import declaration review and feasible measures to improve compliance rates among related operators; the challenges and changes posed by the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to domestic industries and customs; U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) measures that balance clearance efficiency and cargo security, offering a reference for improving customs clearance in Taiwan; and the role and opportunities for customs in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Through in-depth discussions on these topics, officers not only deepened their understanding of current international concerns but also strengthened their ability to adapt to future regulations, technologies, and policies.
The Customs Administration stated that this simulated conference is part of its regular internal training program, designed to help officers stay updated on international customs developments, enhance their understanding of global issues, and strengthen their engagement in relevant meetings. Customs will continue to hold such conferences to equip officers with a global perspective and professional expertise, enabling them to play an active role in international meetings and cross-border collaborations.
