Customs Enhances AI Application, and Tariff Attribution Service Evolved

Customs Administration of the Ministry of Finance actively promotes the application of artificial intelligence to improve administrative efficiency and service quality. The AI Tariff Attribution Service was launched on September 25, 2024. Since its launch, the number of uses has increased month by month. In order to enhance AI applications, Customs Administration has taken the initiative to optimize services and plans to increase the AI recommended tariff codes from 6-digit to 8-digit codes on December 26, which will be more convenient for the public to refer to and use.
Customs Administration stated that the AI Tariff Attribution System launched in September has been used 87,000 times so far, with an average of about 30,000 queries per month and growing each month. In order to provide better services, the AI Tariff Attribution System will be upgraded from recommending 6-digit tariff codes to 8-digit codes, with an updated interface for smoother operation, making it easier for businesses and individuals to identify the most appropriate tariff code for their goods.
Customs Administration further explained using an example of the product name "Potato Chips." Current query results show only 6-digit tariff codes, such as "1905.90," which includes eight different tariff codes. After optimization, the AI will recommend the 8-digit tariff code "1905.90.90," offering more precise classification. Additionally, each 8-digit tariff code will display a confidence level (the AI model’s probability that the product belongs to the given tariff code), helping businesses and individuals make more accurate decisions on the correct tariff code classification.
Customs Administration stated the upgraded 8-digit AI Tariff Attribution System will help businesses and individuals more quickly and accurately find the correct tariff code, speeding up the cargo declaration process. We welcome businesses and individuals to make good use of it. For any questions, please dial the toll-free Tariff Attribution System’s customer service hotline 0800-056-168.
