Taipei Customs Continuously Suppress Drug Smuggling to Guard the Border and Ensure the Safety of Our Homeland

In order to intercept drugs from entering our border, Taipei Customs has continuously launched the anti-drug work. The total gross weight of seized drugs, in the first half year of 2022, has reached 577 kilograms. It shows Taipei Customs determination to suppress drug smuggling.

Based on the seized cases of the first half year of 2022, Taipei Customs analyses more than half of the cases are from Europe and north America. The total gross weight of the aforementioned illegal imported drugs, marijuana accounts for a large percentage of these seized goods, was around 435 kilograms, which includes 164 kilograms of Marijuana buds were seized from the luggage of inbound passengers of north America. Furthermore, south Asia has also become the place of origin for certain drugs. The type of smuggling drugs includes sibutramine, ketamine, methamphetamine, etc. Especially, sibutramine, a well-known weight reducing medicine, has been listed as a Category 4 drug in Taiwan in 2022, which has the function of suppressing appetite. However, it will probably have the following side effects after taking it, such as heart palpitations, blindness, and sudden death. The main source of these seized products is from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

Taipei Customs called on our fellow citizens not to mail, shop or carry Marijuana and its products, as well as commodities with ingredients of cannabis and THC on label, such as hemp seeds, hemp sugar or hemp protein power, etc. In accordance with "Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act", offenders of manufacturing, transporting, or selling narcotics are subject to maximum death penalty or life imprisonment, and may also be subject to a fine of no more than thirty million New Taiwan Dollars. 

Taipei Customs will continue to actively implement the "New Generation Anti-Drug Strategy 2.0" policy. We will closely cooperate with domestic and foreign law enforcement agencies to deter the activity of smuggling groups, block the source of drugs and guard our border to ensure the safety of homeland.
