Taipei Customs Reminds the Public to Take Notice of Import Regulations on Toys Before Making Cross-border Online Purchases

Taipei Customs stated that the recent craze for Beyblade has led to a surge in cross-border online purchases. As some importers are unfamiliar with the relevant import regulations, customs clearance cannot proceed smoothly. In some cases, the goods may even have to be returned to the exporting country or abandoned. Taipei Customs explained that an approval document issued by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), Ministry of Economic Affairs is required for importation of toys and other products intended for use by children under the age of 14. In addition, if a product has Bluetooth functionality, an Import Permit for Controlled Telecommunications Radio-Frequency Devices issued by the National Communications Commission (NCC) is also required.

Taipei Customs further explained that imported toys for personal use can be exempt from inspection subject to the following requirements: The total value of imported goods is less than USD 1,000 and the quantity does not exceed five pieces; or the total value exceeds USD 1,000 and the quantity is limited to one piece. In addition, according to NCC, importers aged 18 or above who import the aforementioned goods by mail or other non-accompanied means are limited to no more than two pieces per shipment, with a maximum of 10 pieces per year.

Taipei Customs urged the public to take notice of the relevant regulations and apply for the necessary documents before importing such goods. Importers importing such products for personal use are advised to be aware of the applicable limits on value, quantity, and age. If importers have any questions regarding declaration procedures, they may consult with the competent authority, or seek assistance from Customs officer to ensure smooth customs clearance and protect their rights and interests.
