As the African swine fever (ASF) epidemic continues to spread in Asia, Keelung Customs (KLC) reiterates its call for the public not to bring pork into Taiwan, as well as not to ask relatives or friends overseas to send meat products from ASF-affected areas. KLC said that the recently-seized unquarantined pork products, including pork moon cakes, sausages, and fried pork rinds are mostly from mainland China (including Hong Kong, Macau) and southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam. According to the Statute for Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Diseases, importing meat products illegally from an epidemic area may be subject to seven years in prison and an additional fine of up to NT$3 million. The Customs will continue to target high-risk smuggled goods hidden in postal or express delivery parcels, while X-ray inspections will be fully implemented to strengthen border enforcement.

ASF has posed significant threat to agriculture as well as the relevant industries for countries all over the world. Thanks to continuous efforts to keep ASF at bay, Taiwan remains non-epidemic. In the meantime, the public are urged to declare pork products honestly and meet the quarantine requirements so as to protect Taiwan's agricultural and livestock industry and to maintain civilian health.
