Tax Refund Checks Are Only Valid for One Year, So Please Collect Them As Soon As Possible.

National Taxation Bureau of Kaohsiung, Ministry of Finance said that it would start to issue tax refunds for the 2020 Alien Individual Income Tax since July 2021. For tax refunded by check, the check is only valid for one year from the check issue date. Taxpayers are reminded to collect their checks as soon as possible to protect their rights.

The Bureau further clarified that in terms of the tax refund checks which taxpayers receive, if they are "Account Payee Only," they can be cashed directly at the Bank of Taiwan's Kaohsiung Branch or deposited into the taxpayers' own financial institution accounts. If they are "crossed checks," they cannot be cashed directly, but to be deposited in the taxpayers' own or another person's financial institution accounts by endorsement. However, if a tax refund check has not been collected for more than one year from the check issue date, financial institutions will stop paying the check, and the taxpayer must fill out the "Application for Reissue of Tax Refund Check" and wait for the taxing authority to reissue it before it can be collected.

The Bureau urged foreigners to file individual income tax returns using direct deposit for tax refunds, avoiding going out between National Taxation Bureau and financial institutions, saving queuing time for collection, and not worrying about expired or lost checks, which is safe and convenient.
